Lo mwcwstilbene è un diariletene, cioè un mwdaidrocarburo composto da un mwdqetene sostituito con un gruppo mwdgfenilico su entrambi gli atomi di carbonio del doppio legame. Il nome stilbene deriva dal greco mwdwstilbos, che significa lucente. Esistono due possibili mweaisomeri geometrici dello stilbene, lo Z-Stilbene e l'E-Stilbene.

La maggior parte degli stilbeni si trova nelle piante. Agiscono infatti come composti antifungini, sono prodotti generalmente dopo una lesione o un'infezione.
